Honoring our Veterans
BY Dairyland Seed Agronomy Team
Each year the United States of America observes Veterans Day on November 11. On that day we offer special honor and recognition to those who served and are serving our great nation. Words can’t express the gratitude we at Dairyland Seed have for these selfless individuals and their families. The sacrifices they have made during their service most certainly are deserving of our honor and reverence.
According to Military.com, Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day in 1918 and it marked the end of World War 1 on the “11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month”. In 1954 it was changed to what we all know as Veterans Day. On this day we honor all veterans, which is why there is not the “possessive” apostrophe instead plural form. It is not a day belonging to Veterans but a day honoring all veterans. The Agronomy Team at Dairyland Seed is very privileged and proud to have two veterans on staff: Mark Gibson and Rod Moran.
From all the Dairyland Seed /Corteva family we wish to honor and thank all our veterans for their service and sacrifice. This year Corteva’s Veterans Day celebration will feature Lieutenant Colonel Robert Darling. Lieutenant Colonel Darling retired from the United States Marine Corps with just over twenty years of active duty service in October 2007. He flew Cobra attack helicopters in Desert Shield and Desert Storm during the first Gulf War and in Somalia, Africa in support of Operation Restore Hope. In June 1998, he was selected to fly as a presidential pilot with Marine Helicopter Squadron One and in October 2000, he was selected to work for The White House Military Office, Airlift Operations Department. It was in that capacity that, then Major Darling supported the President, Vice President and National Security Advisor in the Presidential Emergency Operations Center (PEOC) on September 11, 2001.
At the urging of family, friends, and colleagues to share his witness to American history, Darling wrote his memoir “24 Hours Inside the President’s Bunker, 9/11/01: The White House.” He continues to share his personal experience and knowledge of crisis leadership with many military, corporate, and university audiences nationwide. He is the President of Quantitative Analytics, LLC, an aviation operations and logistics consulting company located in Stafford, Virginia. Take time not just on November 11, but frequently throughout the year to appreciate those who have helped protect and preserve this place we call The United States of America! God Bless America!
