Do you come from a farming family?
Yes, my family farms in south central Wisconsin. It is a grain and dairy operation, but also has a long history of growing tobacco.
How long have you been an agronomist and what do you enjoy most about being one?
I spent seven years as a research agronomist in the plant breeding space, and now four years in this role working with customers. Being in a position that allows me to interact more with farmers and customers has been the best part.
Where did you go to college and what did you study?
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in soil and crop science from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and a Master of Science degree in agronomy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
What’s your favorite thing about agriculture?
I love the commonalities across the diversity of agriculture: family, valuing hard work, a connection to the land and a love for watching things grow. It’s why a corn farmer in Wisconsin can instantly befriend a peach farmer in Georgia.
What’s the one piece of advice you have for farmers in the 2023 season?
Hindsight is 20/20 when the water spigot turned off in 2023. If you are questioning your agronomic practices, keep any human error separate from environmental stress.
