The Sins of Planting Season Last All Year Long

BY Dairyland Seed Agronomy Team

An agronomist mentor once said, “the sins of planting season last all year long”. In previous articles we discussed scouting fields all year long. That’s the case now.

Recently a grower was scouting fields pre-harvest and noticed plants that were not up to expectations. He contacted his Dairyland Seed team to help him sort through possible causes. With the assistance of his dealer, DSM and regional agronomist, it was determined that there was at least a ¾” difference in planting depth from desirable to undesirable plants. Yes, planting depth can be determined even in September. This scenario certainly proves, that what we do in the spring does follow us through to yields in the fall.

Other issues we see at this time of year may be side effects of field compaction and/or side wall compaction from the planter. Plant spacing issues can be diagnosed at about anytime during the growing season, but is another issue we come across as we look at ultimate ear development.

This visit reiterates the importance of diligent scouting and utilizing the Dairyland Seed services and resources that come with every seed you purchase. Never hesitate to contact your Dairyland Seed representative with questions or concerns, it’s part of the value we provide as seed professionals.

As we are in or just getting done with many hunting seasons, asking an Agronomist to pick a Nitrogen (N) rate for your corn crop is akin to a asking a hunter what his or her favorite weapon to hunt with is. The answer in both instances is probably “well it depends.” As an Agronomist, before recommending a nitrogen rate, I typically ask several questions. It’s often said that the number of questions I might ask is comparable to the number of inquiries new parents make when consulting a physician about their child. Before suggesting an N rate, I have considered the following background information and questions:
