Product and Agronomy Research - PAR

PRODUCT AND AGRONOMY RESEARCH – PAR

It’s that time of year where we attend appreciation banquets, field days, dealer trainings and kick-offs. Next week features one of our core research location’s field day. On Wednesday August 24 and Thursday August 25 we will host our PAR plot field days in Wabash, Indiana. This location, in conjunction with three other sites, aids our growers in answering some of important agronomic questions.

Information gathered from these sites is analyzed each year and delivered in a research bulletin in December.  It is also available through various online and in-person meetings and events. In addition to research locations, Dairyland Seeds also assists in on-farm trials and pulls data together data from multiple sources to provide valid information and insight into some of the major agricultural questions.

This year is no exception. Almost every year, farm operations are watching nitrogen and nitrogen input costs.  In the past few years, foliar corn diseases have taken a front row seat when it comes to agronomic concern.  Every few years we have replant concerns and, finally, what are some innovative new concepts to investigate for crop production?  For 2022, the Dairyland Seed agronomy team has research focused on all these agronomic concerns.

  • Nitrogen management and the use of biologic products like Pivot Bio’s Proven 40 and Corteva’s Utrisha™ N
  • Fungicide use and timing for grain and silage corn
  • Date of planting for corn and soybeans
  • Date of harvest for corn (Phantom Yield Loss)
  • Early harvest of soybeans

Watch your agronomy newsletters and company mailings for opportunities in the fall of 2022 and winter of 2023 to learn more about our findings.

  • Soybean Germination and Early Growth Refresher
Soybeans, much like corn, need to imbibe (take in) water for the germination process to take place. The difference is that soybeans need to take in 50 percent of its weight in water to start this process compared to 30 percent for corn. Since soybeans are about two-thirds the weight of corn, the actual amount of water needed to germinate is very similar.

  • Growing Degree Unit Compression
The extended cool and wet weather has kept many of us out of the fields and has raised concerns about planting delays, especially if replants are needed. A common question among growers is whether they should consider switching some of their full-season hybrids to shorter-maturity hybrids, and if so, how soon? The short answer to that question is no, it’s still a little early to consider switching hybrids. Although delayed planting shortens the growing season, the main driver is still growing degree units (GDUs) for the plant to reach physiological maturity before a killing frost.
