Enlist Application Reminders

BY Dairyland Seed Agronomy Team

As herbicide applications on Enlist E3® soybeans begin across the Dairyland footprint, we looked for guidance in Enlist® applications from a Corteva Enlist Field Specialist, Tony Goede. Tony covers Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin, and helps to support the Enlist portfolio. The following are Tony’s responses to some common questions asked around Enlist One® and Enlist Duo® applications on Enlist E3 soybeans.

What are the rates of Enlist One and Enlist Duo?

  • Remember 2 pints per acre for Enlist One® and 4.75 pints per acre for Enlist Duo®.

What are the recommended application timings of Enlist herbicides?

  • Plan to spray your first post application 21-28 days following the pre-application is recommended.
  • Scouting the field and targeting weeds less than four inches tall.  Enlist herbicide can be applied up through R1 in soybeans.

What are some tips for spraying in drought-like conditions?

  • When there have been extended periods without rain, the effectiveness of herbicide applications can fluctuate if proper precautions are not taken.  Using adjuvants with MSO or COCs are important to help penetrate the hardened cuticles of the weeds.
  • Be mindful of the products in your tank mix; refer to specific product labels for information on applications in stressed conditions.

Any possible tank mix partners for residual control? Where can we find the list of approved products?

  • We always recommend having multiple effective modes of action (MOA) in every herbicide application.  This helps provide stewardship and longevity of each product used.
  • Use www.Enlist.com to check if the products being considered are approved tank mix partners with Enlist One or Enlist Duo.

Any other Enlist or other herbicide topics you find relevant for this season so far?

  • As new products are brought to the industry, be sure to check compatibility with other chemistries you plan to use.  Formulations can be quite different for different brands of the same active ingredient.
  • Utilizing a jar test may save an entire tank of unusable spray mix.

This is excellent insight as we look at post applications of Enliston Enlist E3 soybeans. • Soybean Germination and Early Growth Refresher
Soybeans, much like corn, need to imbibe (take in) water for the germination process to take place. The difference is that soybeans need to take in 50 percent of its weight in water to start this process compared to 30 percent for corn. Since soybeans are about two-thirds the weight of corn, the actual amount of water needed to germinate is very similar.

  • Growing Degree Unit Compression
The extended cool and wet weather has kept many of us out of the fields and has raised concerns about planting delays, especially if replants are needed. A common question among growers is whether they should consider switching some of their full-season hybrids to shorter-maturity hybrids, and if so, how soon? The short answer to that question is no, it’s still a little early to consider switching hybrids. Although delayed planting shortens the growing season, the main driver is still growing degree units (GDUs) for the plant to reach physiological maturity before a killing frost.
