Dairyland Seed Delivers Yield in 2022 FIRST Trials

BY Dairyland Seed Agronomy Team

On December 31st, the premiere 3rd party seed testing organization in the Midwest, Farmers Independent Research of Seed Technologies (FIRST), published a report of their top performing products in 2022. Dairyland Seed products excelled in many of the maturity group reports, which we are proud to share in the links below.

FIRST’s 2022 Top 30 Corn Grain Performances (link)

Of the 76 hybrids at 104 day and under, Dairyland Seed held 4 of the top 5! DS-4219AM was #1 with an 11.2 bu/ac advantage across 10 testing regions; the highest advantage posted by a product at any maturity. DS-3550AM, DS-3727AM and DS-3900AM held the 3rd, 4th and 5th places, respectively. In the 105-110 day group, DS-5095AM and DS-4917AM finished in the top 10 out of 100 products. Additionally, four other products posted top 30 performances across these two maturity groups.

FIRST’s 2022 Top 30 Soybean Performances (link)

DSR-1505E gave us a top 10 showing in the 0.0-2.0 soybean maturity group which included 44 products. It averaged a 2.2 bu/ac advantage across 4 testing regions. Additionally, DSR-1290E, DSR-1450E and DSR-2040E each finished in the top 25.

A note about 111+ day corn and 2.1+ soybeans

FIRST tests in more than 30 regions across the Midwest and Delmarva. To be included in their overall top 30 report, corn products needed to be tested in at least 3 regions with 5 or more locations each and soybean products in 3 regions with 4 or more locations each. Our 111+ day grain products and 8 of our 10 soybean entries over 2.1 maturity did not meet these criteria, having only been entered in 2 regions. You can find excellent results from many of these products by visiting the 2022 FIRST Grain Corn Harvest Reports or 2022 FIRST Soybean Harvest Reports pages.

  • Deciding or Choosing a Nitrogen Rate
As we are in or just getting done with many hunting seasons, asking an Agronomist to pick a Nitrogen (N) rate for your corn crop is akin to a asking a hunter what his or her favorite weapon to hunt with is. The answer in both instances is probably “well it depends.” As an Agronomist, before recommending a nitrogen rate, I typically ask several questions. It’s often said that the number of questions I might ask is comparable to the number of inquiries new parents make when consulting a physician about their child. Before suggesting an N rate, I have considered the following background information and questions:
