Agronomist Christmas Gift is Coming Soon

BY Dairyland Seed Agronomy Team

Most of you have been relatively good this year. So, the Santa Clausgronomists will have a great gift for you. The annual Product and Agronomy Research (PAR) Report for 2023 will be out just in time for Christmas!

The Dairyland Seed Agronomy Team has once again been busy collaborating with researchers, contractors, and growers throughout the marketing area to conduct agronomic trials. Each year it is a hectic race to get harvest data collected, analyzed, and presented in a timely fashion. This year was no exception, and a late harvest in many cases made the turn around even tighter. But great teams rise to the occasion and the 2023 Annual PAR Report will be ready for your stockings.

What can you expect from this year’s report? We continued several projects from previous years including corn foliar fungicide timing, foliar fungicide for silage corn, Utrisha™ N use on corn and corn harvest timing. New this year are a couple soybean trials looking at micronutrients, sclerotinia white mold seed treatments and Utrisha™ P use on corn and soybeans. We will also feature a discussion on seed orientation while planting corn. Another new feature with be our Curiosity Corner which is a quick look at concepts and products in a demonstration or show-and-tell format. We will report the simple data, but it is only one strip in one location. These plots are a good place to look at future full-scale trials.

Look for your 2023 copy in the mail, online, at your next Dairyland Seed function or ask your nearest Dairyland Seed representative. Then, in February, join the Dairyland Seed agronomy team for further discussion on these topics and more in the Dairyland Seed Café virtual meetings. These Teams Meetings will be scheduled every Friday morning in February at 7:30 A.M. CT/8:30 A.M. ET.  Mark your calendars now for February 2, 9, 16 and 23. Watch your email for the link.

  • Soybean Germination and Early Growth Refresher
Soybeans, much like corn, need to imbibe (take in) water for the germination process to take place. The difference is that soybeans need to take in 50 percent of its weight in water to start this process compared to 30 percent for corn. Since soybeans are about two-thirds the weight of corn, the actual amount of water needed to germinate is very similar.

  • Growing Degree Unit Compression
The extended cool and wet weather has kept many of us out of the fields and has raised concerns about planting delays, especially if replants are needed. A common question among growers is whether they should consider switching some of their full-season hybrids to shorter-maturity hybrids, and if so, how soon? The short answer to that question is no, it’s still a little early to consider switching hybrids. Although delayed planting shortens the growing season, the main driver is still growing degree units (GDUs) for the plant to reach physiological maturity before a killing frost.
