2022 On-Farm Grain Plot Data

BY Dairyland Seed Agronomy Team

This week's agronomy newsletter will take a break from the PAR plot agronomy research projects to look at our on-farm product trials. These plots are important for learning about local product performance and offer an opportunity to get hands on experience with the latest and greatest seed. From North Dakota to Indiana, we put our seed to work. We learn where one product might succeed and where another may not be a good fit. We have discussions about management practices and agronomic challenges. Observations are carefully recorded, and we anxiously await end-of-season results. If you are like us, harvest day is like an early Christmas present!

Thank you to all the customers, dealers, and district sales managers who take time during the busiest of seasons to plant and harvest these plots. We really appreciate the effort! While you might be intimately familiar with plot trends in your local geography, here is a fun overview of the broader season that was 2022. For specific plot results, go to dairylandseed.com.

  • Deciding or Choosing a Nitrogen Rate
As we are in or just getting done with many hunting seasons, asking an Agronomist to pick a Nitrogen (N) rate for your corn crop is akin to a asking a hunter what his or her favorite weapon to hunt with is. The answer in both instances is probably “well it depends.” As an Agronomist, before recommending a nitrogen rate, I typically ask several questions. It’s often said that the number of questions I might ask is comparable to the number of inquiries new parents make when consulting a physician about their child. Before suggesting an N rate, I have considered the following background information and questions:
