5 Quick Questions: Bob Purlee

BY Dairyland Seed

In this District Sales Manager edition of our 5 Quick Questions series, we highlight a member of our eastern region team. Get to know the dynamic and experienced Bob Purlee!

How long have you been with Dairyland Seed?

I started with Dairyland Seed in 2018 when Brodbeck Seed was consolidated into Dairyland Seed. I had been with Brodbeck since 2002.

Where is your favorite place to vacation?

Over the last few years, we’ve been going to Michigan during the summer. My wife, Kathleen, and I love spending time with our adult children there.

What region do you serve?

I serve northeast Indiana, primarily the greater Fort Wayne area.

What unique challenges do farmers in your region face?

My area is challenged by the wide variability in soil types throughout the territory. From heavy clays to sand to loamy soils. This variability makes it challenging to get consistent, even emergence in the spring. Throughout the season, weather can create even more variability in performance.

What advice do you have to help them overcome these challenges?

Dairyland Seed offers many resources to help growers overcome these challenges. In my area, we have an extensive plot program that helps growers understand Dairyland Seed hybrids and where they should be planted for optimum performance.

Ryan Mueller is Dairyland Seed’s Product Portfolio and Agronomy Leader. His dual role enables him to work in two unique areas of the business. His product portfolio activities deal with product life cycle management and the advancement process for all crops: determining product introductions, identifying products to drop from the lineup and estimating the lifeline of existing products in the portfolio. An added challenge includes ensuring adequate supply, allocations, and supply cuts. Following harvest, Ryan spends hours analyzing product data and, with guidance from Corteva and the agronomy team, makes decisions to determine which products are in the growth mode and which products should be phased out.
